There’s no getting away from the fact that fire doors save lives.

Fitted internally, between rooms, on stairwells or as front doors on flats or apartments they act as a barrier to both flames and smoke, stopping a blaze from spreading and helping people evacuate quickly and safely.

If tragedy strikes and you’re stuck in a building where a fire has started, the fire door could potentially be the only thing keeping you safe. The bottom line is that a certified fire door can save lives.

But to do their job properly, they need to be checked regularly.

In order for a fire door to operate at optimum capacity it should be certified, fitted correctly and checked regularly to ensure it remains up to the appropriate standards.

Did you know it’s actually a legal requirement?

Those responsible for all multi-occupied residential buildings taller than 11 metres are required to undertake quarterly checks on all fire doors, and undertake annual checks of all flat entrance doors that lead on to a building’s common parts.

Fire door safety is about more than just fitting them correctly, it’s about checking them regularly, too.

Regular checks should include:

• Checking to ensure that there’s been no alterations or damage to a door’s glazing apertures or air transfer grille.
• Checking that the door closer shuts the door, and that the door closes correctly around the whole frame.
• Making sure that there is no visible damage, either from wear and tear or from deliberate force.
